Catalogue Note

These rare, natural form pebbles are chosen for their size and quality. The shape has been purposefully maintained and carefully carved in a manner that harmoniously enhances the pyramidal form of the stone.  This type generally has a carved, flat bottom indicating that it may have been used as a paper or scroll weight on a scholar's desk as well as conforming well to the hand and pleasing to the touch.

Another pebble with an archaistic style phoenix bird subtly carved or 'hidden' in the stone, formerly in the Periony collection, is illustrated in Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss, 'Arts from the Scholar's Studio', Oriental Ceramic Society, Hong Kong, 1986, p. 116, no. 80.
