of hexagonal section, the baluster-form vases festooned with leafy, blossoming peony boughs well-carved in high relief from rim to waist, the lower section with a pair of carved ovoid panels of confronting dragons in pursuit of a 'pearl' outlined in black ink, with wood stands (4)

Provenance

The Collection of General Grenville M. Dodge (1831-1916) and thence by descent and acquired by the present owner from the family in the 1980's. Dodge rose to the rank of Union general during the Civil War and was a leading figure in the development of the Transcontinental Railway and served in the United States Congress as a representative from Iowa.

Condition

One peony petal broken on one vase and showing old traces of glue. The other has a crack running across the foot that extends approx. 1/4 in. into the body on either side.
