  • huanghuali wood
the top formed from a single plank within a mortise and tenon frame with everted flanges, the narrow apron with cloud spandrels above four squared sectioned legs, joined by pierced panels with further cloud motif inserted into slab feet, the underside with four transverse braces

Condition

The table is in overall good condition. The joins have been consolidated, there is a repaired split to one corner of the frame, there are later added dowels to stabilize the shaped brackets, one of the short end frames is a replacement and the other has a sanded down chip and both slab feet have been replaced. The patina is good with expected wear and a few minor patches.

Catalogue Note

A huanghuali recessed trestle leg table with similar openwork carving was included in the exhibition, Ming Furniture, Grace Wu Bruce, Ltd., Hong Kong, 1995, pp. 20-21, no.9, which also includes several 16th and 17th century illustrations of interiors with similar tables.
