with shallow rounded sides and lipped rim, painted with a pheasant and a song bird perched among green rockwork, peonies and blossoming crab apple, a second song bird flying above, the base marked in underglaze blue with a ribbon-tied emblem within a double circle, the sides etched above the channeled foot with two characters reading wen wu

Provenance

Collection of Dr. Richard and Mrs. Mary Eckhardt, acquired in Japan between 1947-1952 while Dr. Eckhardt was serving as a surgeon in the United States Army and thence by descent.

Condition

There is a four inch (10cm) by 1 1/2 inch (4cm) section broken from the rim and restored back together, having been previously riveted. The overpaint is now discolored. There is some minor fritting to the rim edge and some typical minor light surface scratching overall.
