Description

each with shallow rounded sides and lipped rim, painted with a central medallion of three stylized phoenix about a central composite flower with scrolling leafy stems, within an underglaze-blue double-line border, repeated at the rim, the underside with four phoenix alternating with flowers and scrolling foliage, above a narrow 'C'-scroll and dot border around the foot, six-character seal mark in underglaze blue (2)
Provenance
Collection of Dr. Richard and Mrs. Mary Eckhardt, acquired in Japan between 1947-1952 while Dr. Eckhardt was serving as a surgeon in the United States Army and thence by descent.
Condition
One has four 3/8 inch (1cm) long haircracks to the rim edge and three small iron spots on the interior.
The other has been broken cleanly in half and and repaired, with two triangular pieces of the rim also broken out and fixed back together at one end of the break. The breaks are clean with no significant losses.
