- The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception
- ivory, on wood base with three ivory panels depicting the Annunciation and the Adoration of the Shepherds
- Attributed to Dio Claudio Beissonat (active second half 17th century) Italian, Naples, last quarter 17th century
with an old collection label to the back of the base inscribed: No 88 and a further partial label to the underside of the base

Condition
Overall the condition of the piece is good with some minor wear and dirt consistent with age. There is a chip to one of the Virgin's thumbs. The two sides of the moon may have been reattached. The figure lifts clear of the base and the attachment between the figure and the base is fragile. There is some old worming to the base and two of the framing sections around the central panel of the Adoration have been lost. There is dirt across the surfaces of the base.

Catalogue Note
The present figure compares closely with a number of ivories by Beissonat, such as his Inmaculada in the Palacio del Pardo (Estella, op. cit. no. 105, fig. 109). A similar Virgin, but on a larger scale, from a private collection on Piazza Farnese in Rome was sold at Sotheby's, Rome on 18th May 2004, lot 425. The present ivory is distinguished by its ebonised wood base with fine ivory pradella panels.
