including a chasuble worked with elaborate gilt metal thread scrolls and edging and with polychromed silk floral trails. Two altar veils: one worked in gold thread with central medallion with initials IHS, with four sided surround gilt metal scrolling incorporating embroided birds and flowers; the other veil worked only in polychromed silks with ribbon-tied strapwork enclosing a non armorial cartouche bearing a flaming heart pierced with arrows and surmounted by a Bishop's hat and flanked by angels, surrounded by trails of flowers and fruit incorporating birds and butterflies; with a further small rectangular altar panel, worked in polychromed silks with metal thead detailing, with a central monstrance embroided with IHS with crowned Imperial double-headed eagle within the top of the arch-shaped surround, incorporating flowering trails with birds and large parrot; together with an oval chenile and appliqué net floral garland panel, 19th century (Qty: 5)

Condition

Chasuble: Silk embroidery in very good condition overall. Gilt metal threads with some abrasion and some core threads visible. Variety of technique used in application of metal to very effective overall appearance. Front panel of chasuble with damage, some repaired splits, with consolidation stitches visible, to the foundation silk taffeta, primarily in the top section underneath the shoulder bands, across the torso. The silk ground on the reverse panel in overall good condition with some minor splits in lower section and small water damage stain. Lining inscribed in ink: 37/691. Altar veil with IHS: edged with four sided gilt metal ribbon, lined with salmon silk (with holes, splits and water damage). Ivory coloured silk ground of panel, with some water marks and damage as horizontal splits and holes along three horizontal folds from previous storage methods. Some minor losses to gilt metal thread. Silk embroidery in good overall condition. With small paper label, inscribed in pen: 37/686. Altar veil with Angels: edged with overturned green silk lining (large water stain to the centre of reverse), ivory coloured satin ground with some abrasions and some small areas with pulled threads, small hole in top left and top right corners and some small dark spots stains on the right hand side and lower edge of panel (possibly wax). Silk embroidery in good overall condition, and very finely worked. With an old paper label inscribed in pen: 37/687. Altar panel: Lined with salmon silk (with holes and stains), edged with polychrome woven ribbon. The ivory coloured satin ground with numerous creases and abrasion to relief of folds created as a result, surface wax centre right side and spot centre left and surface substance on monstrance. With small circular metal tag inscribed in pen: 37/688. Oval Floral panel: edged with gilt metal floral ribbon, lined with bronze coloured silk, the ivory coloured silk panel with some creases, evidence of drawn pattern underneath flowers, where net appliqué has been lost. Minor stains. Attached cotton label inscribed in pen: 37/690.
