Provenance

Sotheby's, London 10th December 2002, lot 123

Condition

Overall the condition of the reliefs is good. There is wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age including rubbing to the dark lacquer at the high points. There is naturally occurring worming to the reliefs and there is stable splitting consistent with material particularly down the centre of both reliefs. There are a few minor losses including to the wingtips of the skeleton in the relief with the bearded man. The proper left hand of the skeleton in the relief with the bearded man and the proper right hand of the young man in the other relief have been attached by a nail at the wrist. Joints are visible at the other arms as well. Both reliefs have been mounted on boards which have some naturally occurring splitting, particularly those backing the relief with the bearded man. The two lower boards of that relief have been stabilised with sections of wood. The frames have some minor nicks to the corners.
