Catalogue Note

The present triptych would have been used as a private portable devotional altarpiece. The main panel with the Crucifixion and the two flanking panels with standard-bearers are similar in design to those from a larger triptych originally in Santa Maria Novella, and housed in the Bargello (inv. no. 5A). Further analagous triptychs are at Avignon Cathedral and in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (inv. no. F. 2403). Such altarpieces are reminiscent of their larger public counterparts, such as that in the Certosa di Pavia, the Retable de Poissy in the Louvre (inv. no. MR 379) and the Cluny Triptych in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. no. 17.190.489).
