Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are restorations to the arms. There are minor losses and minor non-active worming, mainly to the bases. The wings and halos are lost (their metal nails survive on the backs). One candelabrum has a restoration to the top. The other has a fissure to the front left and to the back, with restorations. Some of the fingers and tops of the hands are lost or chipped.

Catalogue Note

A comparable pair of 15th century Umbrian gilt and polychromed wood angels were sold at Sotheby's New York on 22nd May 2001, lot 14. A pair of 16th century Italian gilt and polychromed wood angels with similar candlesticks and formerly in the Detroit Institute of Arts were sold at Sotheby's New York on 12th January 1996, lot 1019.
