Catalogue Note

The expression and facila types seen in this Gothic Virgin and Child are characteristic of the Lorraine (or Lotharingen) school. 14th-century sculptors from this area were influenced both by Parisian workshops, hence the strong S-curve of the body, and sculpture created in and around Cologne, which is typified by the more compact proportions.
