Catalogue Note
Like Avant le bain (see lot 195) the present sketch of a nude bather was most probably modeled in the 1870's in London. The model relates closely to Avant le bain and may in fact have been a preparatory sketch. The pose is echoed in the larger sculpture: a seated contraposto with the knees bent to the left and the torso turning to the right, the arms modestly crossed. However, here the head is turned to the left rather than the right and the figure clasps a piece of drapery to her proper left hand, a detail absent in Avant le bain.
Whilst the intimate and domestic studies from this period were not edited in bronze during the artist's lifetime, Hunisak notes that some of the models were allowed by the artist to be edited in ceramic. Therefore it is likely that the present nude was produced during the artist's lifetime. The present model can be compared to a stoneware study of a Nude Arranging her Hair in the collection of the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris.
