Catalogue Note
Jean-Léone Gérome came to sculpture late in life. He exhibited his first sculpture at the Salon of 1878 at the age of 54. He was a close friend of the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet and was even known to describe himself as a 'pupil of Frémiet' in the Salon catalogue. The present sculpture illustrates two of the artist's defining themes - a fanciful fascination with the antique and the colouration of sculpture. The painter worked closely with the Siot-Decauville foundry who were well known for their skill in producing multi-coloured patinas. Here a subtle red tone is seen in the Bacchante's hair.
