Catalogue Note

The present terracotta is notable for the crisp and spontaneous treatment of the surface as well as the lyrical charm of the subject. The model perfectly illustrates Carrier-Belleuse's fascination with an earlier generation of French sculptors working in terracotta, and in particular with the work of Michel Clodion. As Hargrove writes: 'The pastoral innocence of the scene, unburdened by cloying sentimentality, parallels eighteenth-century figurines.' Hargrove illustrates a version of the model which was then in a private collection in Paris, which may be identifiable with the present model.
