Condition

There is dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, including a few chips. There is a restored break at the neck. The base is largely restored. There are further restorations, including to the tip of the nose, to the hood and to the sides of the mozzetta (particularly to the proper right side). There may be smaller restorations, including to the face and cap. There are some losses to the surface, including to the braded decoration at the chest.

Catalogue Note

The present bust is conceptually close to a painted portrait of Pius VI (1775-1799) incorporated into an inkstand in one of Valadier's drawings (Valadier, op. cit. pp. 42-3, no. 18).
