Description

  • Jug with Adam and Eve and scenes from the Life of Christ
  • Hafnerware with coloured glaze, mounted in pewter

  • Attributed to the workshop of Paul Preuning German, Nuremberg, circa 1540-1550

Condition

Overall the condition of the jug is good. There is some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is stable hairline craquelure visible throughout the surface, particularly to the skin tones of the figures. There are some slight lacunae to the surface which would have appeared during firing including to the two Landsknechten and the figure of Adam in the higher band. There are a few minor chips including a larger one to the edge at the feet of Adam and two smaller ones along the same edge. The pewter mounts have some minor warping and nicks to the surface. It is slightly loose on the handle. The knop on the lid is bent at the stem where some white stress marks are visible.
