Catalogue Note
This charming angel most probably formed part of a group of musician angels decorating stalls or a singing gallery. A famous example of such a gallery, representing a dancing and singing orchestra of angels is Luca della Robbia's cantoria in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence. An example of this type of decoration in wood above stalls can still be found in the choir of the Sant’ Ambrogio church in Milan, where the angels surmounting the stall were carved by Giacomo da Torre, Lorenzo da Origgio and Giacomo Del Maino.
