Condition

Overall the condition of the stone is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few small losses, including to the left front corner of the base and to the strap of the bag behind the man's right foot. There are a few restored breaks, including to the beak of the cap and to the strap of the water flask. The satchel is reattached, as is a corner of its raised flap. There are fossilised traces in the stone consistent with the material.

Catalogue Note

The present sculpture differs from the original model in that the second crouching figure is absent. The bronze master model is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 17.174).
