Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age with some dust in the crevices. There are a few minor spats of white paint to the hair and shoulders. There are some minor scratches to the base and the back of the rock and a few minor necks along the edge of the base, shield, proper right knee, proper left thigh and both shoulder blades. The underside is filled with plaster.

Catalogue Note

Caputi was an Italian medallist active during the early-mid 19th century. Another cast of the present model was sold, together with a bronze Crouching Venus, at Sotheby’s London, 4 July 1991, lot 176.
