Catalogue Note
Gustav II Adolf of Sweden was an outstanding general, who claimed many military victories for the Protestants during the Thirty Years War. His fiersome reputation led to him gaining the title 'The Lion of the North'; the lion's pelt in the present bronze alludes to this title. Contemporary coins similarly represent Gustav II Adolf wearing a victor's wreath, see, for example the coin dated 1632 in the British Museum (inv. no. 1848,0419.235).
