Catalogue Note

“all these losses—but you and Bob are the greatest gift of all." Mrs. Kennedy acknowledges the condolence letters she had received from Mrs. McNamara following the assassination of her brother-in-law (and Robert McNamara’s former cabinet colleague, Robert F. Kennedy).

“Your letters were the first to come—and the one afterwards the only one—I feel so badly not to have written you before—but I think you always put off writing to the people you have the deepest things to say to—until you have the words to tell them. But that time never comes—or rather I will never find the words—to tell you all that you and Bob have always been—to Jack and to me and to my children—and to Bobby and Ethel.

“Please know—all these losses—but you and Bob are the greatest gift of all.”
