Catalogue Note

"Here he is with all the world on his shoulders and both of us behind him every step of the way,"  wrote President Johnson to Margaret McNamara. The album begins with a Life Magazine photograph entitled "Kennedy Reaction" which captures Henry Cabot Lodge, Dean Rusk, LBJ, McNamara and George Ball absorbed in somber discussion. Most of the photographs date to 1964 and include a color photograph taken in the Rose Garden 2 May 1964 of  LBJ, McNamara, Secretary of Commerce Luther Hodges, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, Secretary of the Treasury Douglas Dillon, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Secretary of the Interior Stuart Udall, Postmaster General John A. Gronowski, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Anthony J. Callebrezze, and Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman. There are several  photos of the Kennedy Memorial Tribute (1964), of LBJ visiting the Pentagon (Summer 1964); of McNamara's trip to Vietnam (March 1964), of a military reception on the South Lawn of the White House (19 May 1964),  of General Maxwell Taylor's swearing in as ambassador to Vietnam (2 July 1964), and many others.
