Catalogue Note

A charming, artistic thank-you note to Robert McNamara from Jackie Kennedy, being a watercolor drawing of a tiger. A note in McNamara's hand on the verso  indicates that Prime Minister Ky had given him a stuffed tiger during his visit to Vietnam in July 1965. A month later McNamara  brought it to Caroline and John Kennedy during a visit to Cape Cod. Mrs. Kennedy captioned the watercolor: "A Tiger from Vietnam — for Caroline and John | Summer 1965, JBK." On the back, she modestly apologizes for the naïveté of her rendering: "Dear Bob— | It is not much of a tiger, but I did try — | Love J."  Mrs. Kennedy's drawing was also possibly inspired by a watercolor of a tiger by Charles Baskerville that she owned (see The Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sotheby's 23-26 April 1996, lot 715).
