Catalogue Note

First edition of this early defence of free trade.

Nicholas Barbon (c.1640-c.1698) was an English economist, physician, financial speculator and Member of Parliament, an ardent defender of free trade who opened the first insurance company in London after the fire of 1666 and is credited with introducing fire insurance to England. His life was both colourful and controversial: while he was instrumental in rebuilding London after the fire he did so by flouting the law, he was described by a contemporary as a "mob master" well versed in "the arts of leading, winding or driving mankind in herds" (Roger North, quoted in the DNB) and, on his death, left a will stipulating that none of his debts be paid.

The present work shows that Barbon was also an innovative economic theorist, "considered by modern commentators to have propounded advanced views on free trade, the function of money, interest rates and consumption" (DNB).

The Law Society of England and Wales was founded in 1825, with a library forming part of the original prospectus for the Society, and by 1832 it was housed in its present elegant building on Chancery Lane. The current selection of 22 lots all have library stamps reflecting their history and have been marked to indicate their deaccession from the Law Society’s holdings.
