Catalogue Note

The Earl of Balcarres (or Balcarras), built in Bombay using teak and launched in 1811, was one of the finest ships of the East India Company. She was given this authorisation to tackle piracy prior to her departure on a voyage to Bombay and China, the third of ten such voyages she made for the Company before 1834. Continuing lawlessness at sea was of grave concern to the British following their victory in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, which had consolidated British power in India.
