Catalogue Note

A superb copy. Contributors include Samuel Beckett (his first appearance in print: "Dante...Bruno. Vico...Joyce"), Frank Budgen, Stuart Gilbert, Eugene Jolas and William Carlos Williams. Joyce is reputed to have written the hostile "Letters of Protest" himself, and there are a number of quotations from Work in Progress as it had been appearing in transition. Beckett explained the punctuation of the title of his contribution as follows: from Dante to Bruno is a jump of about three centuries, from Bruno to Victo about one, and from Vico to Joyce about two (see Federman & Fletcher, Samuel Beckett. His Works and his Critics. An Essay in Bibliiography, p.3).
