Catalogue Note
The acclaimed Swedish poet, novelist, translator and journalist Sun Axelsson (1935-2011) published her first collection of poems, Goalless in 1959. She then travelled extensively in Latin America, France and Greece. It appears the present inscription by Beckett to her dates from just before one such trip to Greece, with Beckett quoting from the title of Goethe's autobiography Aus meinem Leben: Dichtung und Wahreit (From my Life: Poetry and Truth). Axelsson's subsequent works Stones in the Mouth and Honey Wolves described life under the repression of the Greek military junta. She translated a large number of authors into Swedish, including Pablo Neruda (with whom she shared a close friendship), Federico Garcia Lorca, Jorge Luis Borges, Harold Pinter and Octavio Paz.
