Catalogue Note

A fine presentation copy to his sister-in-law.

Margaret Nelly ("Nellie") Hozier (1888--1955) was the sister of Clementine, whom Churchill married in September 1908. Nellie and Clementine were the daughters of Colonel Sir Henry Montague Hozier (1838-1907) and Lady Henrietta Blanche Hozier (1825-1925), although many sources (including Mary Soames, Churchill's daughter) report that a number of the Hozier children were almost certainly not fathered by Sir Henry but by one or more of Lady Blanche's several lovers. Nellie was captured by the Germans whilst serving as a nurse during the First World War, but was quickly released. She married the distinguished soldier and governor of Palestine Colonel Bertram Romilly, and was the mother of the socialist and anti-fascist Esmond Romilly, who married Jessica Mitford.

Another set of The World Crisis inscribed by Churchill to Nellie Hozier, specially bound in morocco and with autograph corrections, was sold at Christie's on 10 March 1982.
