Catalogue Note
A fine series of watercolours. These illlustrations were first published by Marcus Ward and Co. in their Calendar of the Seasons, 1876 (Schuster and Engen 303). The illustrations were reused within B. Montgomerie Ranking and Thomas K. Tully's Flowers & Fancies Valentines Ancient and Modern, published by Marcus Ward and Co. in 1882 (Schuster and Engen 81). The illustrations were again used on a set of Christmas cards and also Valentine cards (Schuster and Engen 259, 260 and 261).
The reverse of 'Winter' includes the publisher's label noting a date of 16 February 1875. The frame includes an old exhibition label citing the publisher's collection.
