Catalogue Note

Doris Clare Zinkeisen (1897-1991) achieved considerable fame in the 1920s and 1930s for her paintings (exhibiting at the Royal Academy and also the Paris Salon). The artist also enjoyed a successful career as a costume and set designer for the theatre and British film industry. She also worked as an illustrator and commercial artist, producing advertising posters for several railway companies, the London Underground and also murals for the RMS Queen Mary. Her work as a war artist included a number of days recording conditions within the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Her stage work dates between 1922 and 1955, when she worked on over fifty productions.

The designs offered here, mostly of an Egyptian theme, are thought to be for the revue Happy Returns which ran at the Adelphi Theatre from 19 May 1938 for 78 performances. The cast included Flanagan and Allen, and Beatrice Lillie.
