Catalogue Note

Joyce expresses concern for his daughter Lucia, who had been institutionalised the previous year, having been diagnosed with schizophrenia. The recipient of this letter was the wife of Joyce's close friend the tenor John Sullivan, who has agreed to visit Lucia whilst James and Nora Joyce holidayed in Switzerland. Joyce knew that his absence would upset Lucia so he arranged for Mrs Sullivan to post his letters to his daughter from Paris, thus hiding his absence from the country.
