Catalogue Note
A related example, but of slightly larger size and the zitan stand and cover carved with geometric scrolls and with a wood knop, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, vol. 11, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 54.
The form of this censer represents the ingenuity and expertise of jade craftsmen working during the Qianlong period. Deceptively simple in its cylindrical shape, the two interlocking 'T' segments allow slight movement without coming apart. Thus this piece demanded a great level of skill in order for the craftsman to pierce through the stone and create the perfectly fashioned separate parts.
