Description

the stone of a milky white tone tinged with creamy yellow with natural veins and inclusions, carved with deep curved sides rising from a flared foot, the exterior inlaid with droplet-shaped white and red glass gems, each outlined with gilt wires above an arrow-shaped motif resembling stylised flowers, all below a continuous scroll band encircling the mouth similarly decorated with red glass gems and gilt wires, and above a band of overlapping upright petals in low relief skirting the foot

Provenance

Acquired in Paris between the 1970s and the early 90s.

Condition

Sections of the mouthrim have been slightly polished down. A few of the glass gems have possibly been replaced. A small section (0.5 cm) of gilt wire near the mouth is missing, and a few areas have been stabilised with glue, but most of the inlaid decorations have been well preserved. There are some minor losses to the interior around the patch of yellow-tinged natural inclusion. There is also a 2.3 cm groove near the foot, but it is very likely a carving flaw. Apart from some nibbles to the foot, the overall condition is quite good.
