Description
of rectangular form, the front doors and panels decorated with medallions of leafy peonies, prunus, chrysanthemum and finger citrons meticulously carved in relief against a diaper ground framed by key-fret borders, the two front doors opening to reveal a partition of black lacquered shelves, the brass hinges and pulls incised with a floral motif against a finely granulated ground, the top brass handle set on four lobbed plaques decorated with lotus, the unlacquered back covered with a straw lattice panel, the flat base lacquered in black
Provenance
Acquired in Paris between the 1970s and the early 90s.
Condition
The cabinet is overall in good condition. There are some chips to the carving and the edges of the doors. The key-fret frame on the left door has a small area with dents and minor losses, with possibly a few restuck chips as well. Three of the openwork corner ornaments of the black lacquered partition inside are missing. There are some flakes to the lacquered surface (especially to one of the feet), but some have been slightly retouched. One of the brass floral plaques on the top has been secured by a later-added domed screw. The lower hinge of the right door is loosely attached. The lock is missing. There is some typical tarnishing to the brass. There are also some minor losses to the back straw lattice.
