Description
of rectangular form supported on four small bracket feet, with a slightly domed cover wrapping a high inner rim, the top finely incised and gilt in various tones of gold against a black ground with a four-character inscription Wan nian tian biao ('Eternal heavenly mandate') within a rectangular cartouche, flanked by two confronting five-clawed dragons ferociously writhing amidst swirled clouds, with threatening fangs, powerful limbs and a free flowing mane, the longest sides decorated with confronting angular kui dragons, the shorter with a taotie mask, all above a frieze of alternating 'C' and dots motifs around the box, the interior lacquered in red with gold flecks

Acquired in Paris between the 1970s and the early 90s.
Condition
There are some old restoration to the corners and edges, especially to the bottom left edge of the cover (total approx. 14 cm), possibly to stabilise some age cracks. Apart from some minor flakes and surface scratches, the overall condition is quite good with the gilt decoration well preserved.
