Catalogue Note

The pavilion of 'Peace and Harmony' Wanfanganhe is located in the Old Summer Palace Yuanmingyuan. Built during the first year of the Yongzheng reign, the palace located in a middle of a lake was designed in the form of a wan swastika symbol in wish of a peaceful and prosperous reign. It soon became a favorite residence of the Emperor.

The poems inscribed in this album have been composed by the Emperor Yongzheng's sons and grandson and calligraphed by Zhou Xingdai. The scholar Zhou Xingdai (1744-1809) was promoted through Imperial Examination, and became a jinshi in the thirty-sixth year of the Qianlong reign (corresponding to 1771).
