Condition

possible old repair at one handle but also quite possibly made this way. a few little rim dents and scratching. marks clear. generally in pretty good condition.

Catalogue Note

The dog as an image of fidelity might be contrasted to the unreliability of alcohol.
Seling, the first to identify the maker’s mark on this wine cup as that of Hans Lutz I of Augsburg, was not the first modern scholar to mention the goldsmith’s name. Anton Werner, writing in 1913, knew of him, while Rosenberg was the first to publish his mark but without attempting an attribution. Surviving records indicate that Lutz married in 1576 and died in 1606.
