For a windmill cup with the same combination of ornament as this cup, by the Augsburg master Georg Christoph Erhard, circa 1595-1600 see Helmut Seling, Die Kunst der Augsburger Gold-und Silberschmiede 1529-1868, Munich, 1980, illus. 166.
This CL maker’s mark has been identified as that of Christopher Lenker (Lencker), who was born in 1556. He became Meistergerechtigkeit (Assay Master) at Augsburg in 1584, the year after his marriage to Anna Burkhart. Between 1610 and 1612 he was a Geschaumeister (warden) of the city’s guild of goldsmiths. At the time of his death in 1613, Lenker had the reputation of being one of Augsburg’s finest goldsmiths. An example of his work, ‘House Shrine with Pietà’ in silver and ebony, made between 1600 and 1613, is at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession no. M.-1-1953.
