Condition

In overall good condition and a nice piece, with some dents and scratches. marked on body and cover. Feet very slightly bent, some minor pitting on detachable stopper, otherwise lovely colour with wear only to highlights,

Catalogue Note

Johann Betz was born into a family of goldsmiths in Strasbourg. His grandfather, Elias, and his father, Mathias Johann, became master goldsmiths of the city in 1570 and 1629 respectively.  Betz became a master in Augsburg in 1659, and in 1660 he married the widow of another master, Hans Georg Michaels. He married again in 1676 and died in 1697.
