Catalogue Note

The scene of Jacob wrestling with the angel appears to be loosely based on part of an engraving from the series ‘Icones Biblicae’ by Matthäus Merian I (1593-1650), published by him in Frankfurt am Main between about 1625 and 1630. A copy is in the Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, registration number 1857, 1212.78.
Court goldsmiths to Augustus the Strong in Dresden, the brother Johann Melchior and Georg Christoph Dinglinger were aprenticed in Ulm, the latter in the workshop of Georg Preg, from 1683.
Georg Preg became a master goldsmith in 1658. He was Zwölfmeister from 1677 to 1686 and Kohlmeister from 1686 to 1691.
