Catalogue Note
Two almost identical salts, from the North east German town of Magdeburg and from Szczecin’s immediate neighbour Anklam, also ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia by Sweden in 1720, are illustrated by Wolfgang Scheffler, Goldschmiede Mittel-und Nordostdeutschlands, Berlin, 1980 , Taf. VIII, nos 15 and 16.
Johann Friedrich Tihm I was born in 1700, and became a master goldsmith in 1728. He married twice, in 1728 and again in 1737, and died in April 1784. His son, Johann Friedrich II, who was born in 1738, became a master goldsmith in 1774.
