Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Scheu
The connection between the Sheu family member and the guild of Furriers in Sibiu has not been established but the word Scheu was a medieval occupational name for a sheep-shearer, or someone who trimmed cloth. In the Pannwitz collection catalogue of 1905 there is mention of a medallion inside the tankard.
Hans Henssel of Sibiu (Hermannstadt) became a master goldsmith in 1604 and there are references to him until 1632. Until now, this present tankard is his only recorded work to have been identified.
