Catalogue Note

Alexandre-Jean-Marie Leferre entred his mark as a bijoutier and garnisseur (mounter) from 159 rue St. Martin, Paris, on 11 July 1837. He is perhaps best known for his abilities as a skilled mounter, particularly of snuff boxes, many of whose elements (panels of lacquerwork, miniatures, hardstones, &c) dated from the 18th Century or before. For examples of his snuff boxes, see Serge Grandjean, Catalogue des tabatières boîtes et étuis des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles du muse du Louvre, Paris, 1981, pp. 215-224, nos. 299-315. Leferre was active until after 1860.
