Catalogue Note
Johann Philipp Höfler, the son of Johann Höfler, a goldsmith, was born in Nuremburg on 1 February 1663. He spent his apprenticeship from 1675 to 1680 in his father's workshop. Between 1681 and 1685 he went on tour. His travels took him from Munich to Augsburg, Passau, Salzburg and Vienna. On his return journey he visited Würzburg, arriving home on 1 May 1685. He then began working on his masterpieces, which were accepted with distinction. Höfler married a year later and probably gave his oath as a goldsmith in 1686. He was twice chosen as a juror in the guild and in 1711 was elected deputy to The Greater Council of Nuremberg. He died on 4 August 1722. Johann Philipp's brother, Nicholas Hieronymous Höfler was, from 1672 to 1677, also trained by his father.
