Catalogue Note
Paulus Eder (circa 1685-1709), was a glass engraver based in Nuremberg. According to Harol Newmann, only eight pieces signed by him are known. For two glass flasks similarly engraved with birds and fruits among foliage, now respectively in the Germanisches National Museum, Nuremberg and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, see: Erich Meyer-Heisig, Der Nürnberger Glasschnitt des 17 Jahrhunderts, fig. 178 & 183,
The Nuremberg maker's marks on the cover of this jug closely resemble the example reproduced by Rosenberg under number 4283. This number 4283 has in the most up to date work on Nuremberg goldsmiths been combined with Rosenberg 4276 and ascribed to Daniel Sigmund Dockler. Dockler is recorded as the maker of silver-gilt mounts on a gemstone for Duke Johan Christian von Sulzback in 1729. See:Karin Tebbe et al. Nürnberger Golschmiedekunst 1541-1868, Nuremberg, 2007, no. 158
