Catalogue Note
Martinus van Stapele was born in The Hague on 30 December 1731 as the son of Francois and his wife, Pieternella van Santen. He joined his father as a silversmith on 14 November 1757. The year before, he had married Anna Maria de Haan, the daughter of a local silversmith. Martinus' son, Reynier, was a goldsmith. The objects produced by both Martinus van Stapele and his father François show excellent craftsmanship and artistic qualities.
