Catalogue Note
An almost identical basket of the same date, was exhibited in Johannes Schiotling (1730-1799), Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, 24 December 1976-27 February 1977, no. 26. Johannes Schiotling was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1730. He began his training with goldsmith Olof Fernlöf of Gothenburg in 1747, where he became a journeyman in 1753. He removed to Amsterdam in 1760 and, two years later, became a master of the guild. In 1763, he married Margaretha Sophia, the daughter of goldsmith Johann Diedrich Janssen, and he and Janssen later became partners. Schiotling had two sons, Johannes Hendrik and Andreas, both of whom followed their father as goldsmiths, becoming masters in 1792. Johannes Schiotling died in 1799, after which his sons continued to run the workshop.
