Catalogue Note

"I am interested in reformulating the Turkish-Ottoman tradition of Iznik (Nicea) ceramics in terms of content and form. The ceramic sculpture Janet (Mihrisah Sultan) consists of a life-size replica of an 18th century chair imported to Turkey from Europe for use in the Ottoman palaces, around the time when Turks were moving from the low seated cushions, sedir, to the more westernised high chair. I view the chair as a site of transition from tradition to modernity, and the incongruity of the materials underlines the fragility of this still on-goin transition."
