Catalogue Note
Working in a variety of media from painting to sculpture, installation to drawing, Seymen's works are a critique of the Turkish society and its long-held values which have not been questioned for decades. This present work and Lot 50 are two early works by the artist which bear witness to the extent of his superiority as an artist in regards to his technique and delivery of the subject matter. In Untitled, 2008, hundreds of sequins embroidered by the artist onto the canvas work as a commentary on the mandatory military service in Turkey and the place it has in the lives of Turkish men. The two soldiers in a pose reminiscent of the photographs taken as memory during their service in the army are shimmering within a white circle and stand against a strong black background, as the sequins create a spectacle effect bordering on kitsch.
