Condition

Colour: The colours in teh catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the green is brighter and more virbant in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Very close inspection reveals a small unobtrusive loss towards the lower left side, another in the green area towards the upper centre and a small area towards the centre of the top right quadrant. In the lower centre of the green application, there is an area of artist's in-painting. Towards the bottom right edge there is a small unobtrusive hole in the face towards the bottom right edge, and a similar hole in the timber which relates to a screw hole at the back on the lower right side of the panel which has caused a slight loss to the overturn edge. No restoration is apparent under ultra violet light.

Catalogue Note

"Hodgkin's pictures have recorded extremes of weather. He paints in turn an ethereal mist, broad sweeps of driving rain, the blast of strong wind, the violence of storm clouds and the fiery hue of a setting sun. In Hodgkin's work serenity is rare. Anger and jealousy are passions more evident than contentment and calm. The changes noticeable in his art over the last twenty years may perhaps be attributed to his increasing willingness to display emotion in a way that is quite rare in its disregard for propriety and embarrassment, and his paintings have gained in depth and resonance from his apparently fearless willingness to risk disclosing self."
